Living Room Ideas From The Homes Of Top Designers
Today I want to get under the hood of the car to give you some real tips on dining table styling that will help you bring your core ideas to life. And yes, “get under the hood of a car” is the only reference to a car you’ll hear on this blog. I’ve never been under the hood of a real car, but it doesn’t sound like as much fun as creating a centerpiece for the dining room.
Also, fair warning: I’m going to go into detail for you below, so be prepared for a detailed study. I’ll also mention tips for the three main shapes of dining tables (round, square, and rectangular). Because there are so many ways to go terribly wrong. So let’s change that so you can feel confident taking on this (fun) job.
When looking at dining room centerpiece ideas for a round table, less is more. I don’t mean less drama, I just mean less stuff on top of it.
Dining Table Centrepiece Ideas For All Tables
A round dining table only needs a “moment” in between, otherwise the whole scene will look too busy.
Now, when I say a “moment” I don’t necessarily mean an object. Of course, you can place a large vase with a stunning bouquet of flowers or foliage in the center of the table to keep it simple (like the image above from Globewest). But a moment can also be a collection of things that sit together in the middle of your round table.
Here’s the thing: if you group multiple objects in the middle of your table, they must make sense together and they must be contained. What I mean is that they should not be randomly scattered all over the table.
How To Choose The Right Dining Table For Your Home
If you just throw random objects on your desk (especially all at the same height), it reads as indecisive or poorly designed.
The image above (via Prize Tickets) is a great example of the unresolved table style. Three objects of almost the same height simply sit in the center of the table. It doesn’t read like a design moment. I would remove two items and add two taller items to complete the look. Three things placed together always look better in these situations.
A great way to place items on a round dining table is to use a tray, and a round one works best as it mirrors the shape of the table. The corners of a square tray will look too sharp. But you can have a tray with a free flowing shape (like rustic wood) if you like that vibe.
Gorgeous Fall Centerpiece Ideas That Are Easy To Re Create
It would also be advisable to make sure that the material of the tray is different from the material of the round dining table. So, for example, avoid a round marble tray on a round dining table with tulips. It won’t be perceived as contrasting enough and the centerpiece will be less impressive.
If you have a fairly small dining table around 90-120cm wide (here’s a list of our favorite small tables if you’re in the market for one), it’s very important not to overcrowd it.
Scale is everything. Visually, less is more. You don’t want to be overwhelmed by a huge flower arrangement that appears taller and wider than your table.

On the other hand, you also have to make sure that you don’t have something small on top, otherwise the space will look unfinished.
As a general rule, choose a bullet that is half the height of your table. So if your table is 74 cm high (this is a standard size), the center part of the dining table will be approximately 37 cm.
