This little gathering was very informal, starting at 5:30pm so I used our breakfast room table as an appetizer, leaning against one of our breakfast room windows overlooking the back garden.
During this celebration, we still use our bar table in the breakfast room (now we have a round table.). It is usually square but it has 2 leaves that make it square which is what I did.

For my tablecloth, I used a piece of leftover fabric that I had on hand. I think the soft blue color and cream pattern will provide the perfect background.
Tip: I think the tablecloth should be the sub-base for food and serving food. It should not force the table.
Tip: Using large pieces of fabric as a tablecloth gives you more options in terms of design and texture and can be less expensive than a single tablecloth. I buy a minimum of 2 yards, but if the price is right, 2 1/2 yards will definitely give you enough fabric to work with any table.

Before moving on to the tablecloth, I arranged a few boxes and a cake stand on the table to add height and interest. As long as they are sturdy, any box or container will work. I have used shoe boxes, packing boxes, and upside down bags. Move and adjust until you get the look you want.
Tip: Shapes, plates, and decorations don’t all have to be at the same height. Varying the height is a lot of fun.
Place your tablecloth on top of the boxes, tucking in the edges to hide raw edges and provide some cushioning between the boxes. For safety, I prefer not to let the cloth cover the table. I also want to show some parts of my desk.

Tip: If you need to cover the entire table, first use a flat sheet or other tablecloth, lay it on the table and then continue with your boxes and cover the cloth or table.
Since this is a random event, I use one of my medium cutting boards as an organic base to serve the charcuterie. A golden plate will serve as my fruit tray. I also included a Remington Saver shot box that I bought at an estate sale. It will hold my flowers.
Tip: Try to vary the color and texture of your food, but remember that dry is always best for cooking. Light is better than darkness. Think about the color and texture of the food you will be cooking.

There were also white hydrangeas at the grocery store and I couldn’t resist. I am filled with the spirit of a child.
I turned things around and put three tiers of cake stands for my cupcakes. As you can see, I also started placing some white pumpkins “randomly” on the table. I love the white pumpkin against the fabric cream.
After all the dishes are in place, now you can add your plates and napkins. Since this is a very casual fall party, I wanted food that didn’t require silverware.

Tip: Always place dishes and napkins at the beginning of the table and silverware at the end of the table. It is very difficult for guests to take plates, napkins and silverware from a self-service restaurant.
