Decorating for fall is a process on the farm. It doesn’t all happen in one day. (Though I envy those who do!) First, I start outside on the front porch, then I work inward. I use the same process when I decorate for each season. This process involves spreading touches of the season in each room. These gases usually include:

If you visit the farm today, the early fall vignette on the porch (pictured above) is modeled after a handmade tree I made last year. A candle is filled with mustard yellow flowers on the riser, a concrete pumpkin (one of my favorite fall accessories), vintage books, and a ring of natural hops candles at the base.

A vignette, according to interior design, is a small and treasured design statement made up of a group of objects. The group of objects is usually displayed on a shelf, table or other place in the house. Vignettes are a wonderful focal point in a room. Often, vignettes are created on a disc or insert, but they can also be created on a flat surface. Chances are you’ve created vignettes in your home and not even realized it!

Create a cohesive look or tone in a vignette. Feel free to mix styles (modern and traditional or old and new), but make sure the pieces used look like they “belong” together.

Leave space between the parts used in the vignette to avoid making it look cluttered. A “less is more” design approach is important when creating a vignette.

Changing the height of the vignette is key. Sections of different heights allow the eye to move freely instead of scanning the space.

Use textures that are different but complement each other. When creating aisles for each season, be sure to use textures that highlight the specific season.

Vignettes should draw people. Don’t be afraid to add personal touches to them. Things like family photos, family heirlooms, and special occasions in picture frames are wonderful additions to Vignette. They add beauty and uniqueness to the design.

First, decide whether the vignette will stand alone or if it will be created on a disc or riser. Here are some of my favorite trays and napkins this season:

Then, add items to your fall vignette. Using a rule of thumb, select three to five items to use in the vignette design. The Law of Odds centers around the idea that pleasing compositions often have an odd number of elements in the foreground. Three items are commonly used. However, depending on the space being decorated, five or seven items can also be used. In the example of three objects in a vignette, the outer two objects balance the focal point in the center. This creates a simple and natural balance that is pleasing to the eye. Also, when choosing objects to use in vignettes, keep in mind the design qualities (shadow, space, height, texture, and personality) discussed above.

Then, with selected pieces, start playing with vignette design and styling. Some of my “go to” elements when creating a vignette are flowers or plants and books. Of course, in autumn, elements of nature such as pine cones, pumpkins and / or pumpkins are also mandatory. Don’t forget to add a cozy element for the colder months ahead, and candles are a great way to do that.

Flowers and plants are a beautiful way to add color, texture and life to a vignette. I always include this or that. For fall, I like to use flowers. There are many beautiful fresh and fake options available at grocery and craft stores. Don’t forget the dried berries and stems too!

Vintage books are a great way to stack and layer the vignette. They are also great to use when you want to add height. When creating vignettes with books, they can be used vertically or horizontally.

Home decor accents like a string of wooden beads or a wooden connector can be used to add interest to the vinaigrette. However, for fall vignettes I like to use natural elements for the season. After all, there are many! Think pine cones, pumpkins, gourds (dried and otherwise), acorns and fall leaves.

Nothing says “comfortable” in a fall like a candle. You will rarely see a vignette I create on the farm without a candle, especially in the fall and winter. The beautiful atmosphere that a candle can create is amazing. Although flamed candles will forever be in my heart, lately I’ve been using flameless candles. Flameless candles are especially perfect for outdoor use. The glow is still beautiful and you don’t have to worry about the flame blowing out in the wind.

Finally, when you’ve figured out your fall style, it’s time to enjoy it! I love creating vignettes on trays or risers for the coffee table and kitchen as well as the kitchen island. They create beautiful focal points in the room. At the same time, creating vignettes on trays and napkins allows them to be easily moved when it’s time to use them at the table or island. I enjoy creating vignettes that stand alone, on sofa tables, shelves and kitchen counters. However you choose to make your vignette, I think creating and styling for fall can be a fun and festive way to celebrate the season in your home.

As you can see, I did both traditional and unconventional colors, both are beautiful but traditionally set the mood for fall. Today I want to share how I decorated my home this year for Fall 2020 with old and new decor along with some DIYs I created to get that rustic look in my home.

In the entryway I used these beautiful orange pillows made using Joanne’s fabric. I also used my Cricut Maker to make this beautiful Hello Fall lumbar pillow (I recycled one of my old Christmas pillows for this). You can see how here. I used a hops bush wreath on this thrift wall decor piece I got for $12 and painted it flat black years ago. The fall flower stems are from last year and are the same as the wreath, but this year I added cute pumpkin stems that I got from Hobby Lobby; There were many colors to choose from. I added cream, wood and copper pumpkin to soften it a bit and give it the rustic fall look I wanted.

I didn’t want to overdo it for this year’s fall design. I used darker fall colors rather than lighter colors for a more subdued look. I wanted it to be cozy and not dark. Since my furniture is light, I used dark accents to add to the mood for fall.

I wanted a dark rust quilt but the stores didn’t have the color I wanted so I used what I had. I think my favorite part is the coffee table decor with the dark flowers in the new gold tray and light vase.

I brought color into the dining room with some rust colored flowers from last year. We eat every meal here very simply in this fall dining room. I like being able to clean up around or even remove table decorations depending on the meal/number of people we have for dinner.

I added a simple pumpkin sign painted with Dollar Tree products and some simple acorns on the side to the kitchen counter.
