But the tray also gives you the foundation to make all the items on the coffee table look collected and purposeful. Use one that is not too small, but still has room to put your feet if you want.

Choose something that brings nature into the mix. It can be as simple as a bunch of flowers from the grocery store, but if you like longevity, fake stems are fine. (These are some of my favorite fake flowers.) These usually make the focal point of a coffee table.

I like to use decorative boxes to store TV remotes or decorative bowls to throw at odds and ends as needed. They are both beautiful and functional.

If you use a marble tray, use a wooden bowl. Or if using a brass tray, choose a rattan box etc. Using items that are all from one material makes the coffee table decoration look flat. By adding a variety of ingredients, you create a curated look that pops.

I had a hard time finding a large square tray with a handle that I liked, but I finally found the perfect one on Etsy. My store is from no one, but you can find an almost identical disc in it. They offer them in a variety of colors in a velvety matte or glossy finish. A big drive is expensive, but I’ll have mine for years. I like that if I change my color scheme in the future, I can just repaint instead of buying a new tray.

On the ottoman/coffee table, I usually use a light woven tray to add brightness and texture. My favorite is a good size and good price for this big disk:

There is no shame in going faux! I recently bought a blackberry and the two of them make the cutest arrangement:
