Whether you’re a fan of minimalism or have the perfect personality to express your personality, there’s one place that many designers often overlook: the entryway. As this space sets the tone for your home, make an impact in style from the moment your guests step through the front door. Entry tables are a great way to organize your needs, declutter and decorate with your favorite accent pieces to welcome you home. We caught up with celebrity interior designer Ariel Oken for some expert advice on designing a stylish entryway.

Plant parents, take note: Placing plants and leaf clippings on your entry table adds an organic element to the space. To balance the height of the tall plants, add smaller decorations like this rustic bowl and a short stack of books. “Living objects always make a home feel like home—it’s a thoughtful gesture that shows someone lives here,” says Okin.

If you live in an apartment or are short on space, choose furniture with built-in storage to display decorative items on the surface while using the drawers for other essentials. “This is the best way to reduce clutter in high-traffic areas,” says Okin. Knick-knacks from your travels or growing collections of your favorite pieces are great items to display on entry tables.

“Everyone likes to take one last look before they walk out the door,” says Oken. “Plus, mirrors reflect the light and make the space seem bigger.” Classic round mirrors add classic elements with a modern twist, while larger square mirrors are best for last-minute style checks (and selfies, of course). Let the mirror shine and keep everything else simple: Matching table lamps, a coordinated stack of books and other small decorative items make the perfect complement to the space star.

If you’re not quite sure what to do with your decor, try creating a balanced display in your entryway. “Symmetry is not as important as overall balance,” says Oken. “Pair a heavier coffee table book—or a chest of drawers, for example—with a lighter vase or thin brown brass mirror. The split is what makes the interior really interesting.” In this thoughtful space, the designer kept it simple with matching scones, a leafy flower vase and a themed entry table.

An illuminated lamp brings this modern foyer to life. Paired with gold-plated home accessories, this space has just the right amount of sparkle without sacrificing its sleek, clean look. “Materials like brass, lucite, leather and marble always bring out the glamor factor in a Hollywood Regency space,” says Oken.

When coordinating your space, choose a color scheme that you want to bring home every day. Then change your entryway accordingly: Small stacks of books, paintings or decorative accents are an easy way to incorporate your color scheme. “I’m a stickler for chuchki in my home, but for someone who wants a clean, well-kept look, choose a color palette that blends in with the rest of the house,” says Okin.

As far as we’re concerned, this moody entryway is the perfect place to experiment with darker colors. Coordinating blacks, golds and grays keep the table decorations cohesive without competing with the bolder wallpaper. Okin points out that “a cool dark wallpaper can always do the trick to make the hallway more interesting.”

Make the most of a small space with a hall table made of transparent materials such as glass. Decorate it with a stylish lamp, a few small plants and a traditional mirror to keep it simple. “Lucite and acrylic boards disappear wherever you put them,” says Okin. “If you’re trying to create the illusion of more space, they’re always a good bet in this scenario.”

If you’re not into extremes, go for a Scandinavian-inspired design. “Keep the palette clean and monochromatic—and accessories to a minimum—to achieve that clean-up palette look.” This entryway is great inspiration for sticking to the basics: a modern lamp, a pile of reading material and some greenery is all we need to design this location space.
