It’s no secret that this year has been difficult for children. For Lennon’s birthday, I wanted to do something at home to honor his legacy. Ever since she was a baby, we’ve been reading Vashti Harrison’s Little Legends, Amazing People in Black History to her every night. Each evening we focus on an individual and their achievements. As he gets older, he looks forward to it. When I came up with the idea to make this book as a theme for her birthday, I wanted to make her feel like she would be shown in a beautiful light. Representation is important. Images help shape our personality.

Trendy Christmas Decorating Ideas

The cover of the book was my inspiration. I worked with the amazing designer Moonrise who helped recreate Lennon in the same style as the characters in the book. Now he was front and center because he was a wonderful black boy, soon to be a man.

Behind each child was a bookmark with other characters in the book and their names. We made library cards so I can continue reading the rest of the book series about amazing people in history. I kept the color scheme the same as the book cover, focusing on black and white mint and yellow stars.
