The origin and history of the banana leaf motif is an interesting reference for event professionals, as tropical themes for weddings and social events are especially popular in South Florida. Tablecloths and graphics for menus and invitations complementing the tropical theme for these events are often inspired by the banana leaf print, first introduced in CS Stockwell’s 1942 collection.

The elegant Martinique banana leaf motif is a classic American design that dates back to 1937 and is here to stay. In fact, according to a March 2019 article in Architectural Digest, CW Stockwell, the company that created the original motif recently revived it with a collection of wallpapers and fabrics featuring a beautiful reimagining of the Martinique print.

1935: Stockwell’s daughter Lucille becomes president of the company after graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York. He focused on creating proprietary models for the brand
1941: Lucille and her husband envision a large tropical specimen and hire botanical illustrator Albert Stockdale to paint it. Famous Martinique published their 1942 collection, Wallpaper – Art.

1949: Don Loper, the costume designer responsible for redecorating the Beverly Hills Hotel, installs Martinique wallpaper in the hotel.
1970s: Celebrities are often photographed in front of the wallpaper at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and the design becomes a symbol of Hollywood glamour.
1984: The Martinique banana leaf print stands the test of time and restaurateur Brian McNally incorporates it into his new Manhattan restaurant, Indochina. The exclusive restaurant was a favorite spot for celebrities and models, and the design caught the fancy of the fashion industry.

2004: Leonardo DiCaprio played Howard Hughes in The Aviator, and a memorable scene showed DiCaprio standing in a bathroom.
