Decorating The Top Of A Console Table – When it comes to decorating home surfaces, coffee tables tend to draw the most attention and thus steal the spotlight. But console tables are just as important – in fact, even more so, as they’re often in the entryway, where a good first impression is important (although we also present ideas for decorating a console table throughout the house). So read on to learn how the pros style theirs with nineteen table decor ideas. Trust us – these simple styling tricks will tie the whole place together.
Sculptural, understated and decidedly avant garde accents are the name of the game in Athena Calderone’s living room. A rustic wooden console is the perfect place for statues and all the trimmings (in this case, the palo santo), as well as a great place to put extra chairs underneath – always a good idea in a host’s entertainment space.

Take a page from Tamsin Johnson’s table decor book and feature flowers that reflect the artwork – it’s the perfect way to bring a work of art to life. Even better if you put your arrangement in ridiculous vases like these. The contrast between playful elements and classic furniture is fun for those who are in fashion.
Tips For Decorating A Console Table In An Entryway
Dining rooms are another great place for console tables, as you can always use the extra space to put flowers and more. Whether you opt for a standard console or a buffet like Corey Damen Jenkins did here (the latter is a popular choice for its bonus storage features), consider adding lighting for additional functional lighting that’s still stylish.
The space between the dashboard table and the floor can feel a little awkward if it’s empty, especially in a well-appointed and thoughtful space like the hallway in designer Mally Skok’s home. So she decided to fill in the gap with two decorative baskets that complement the old tableware, adding a more casual touch.
Since decorative items can look beautiful in this empty space, you can also choose a more functional piece, like a bench. Here, Catherine Kwong chose a bench that fits neatly under the console table so it can be tucked away when not in use to keep the aisle clear. The angled mirror above draws our attention to the well-designed cone. It’s the perfect use of the empty space under the stairs.

Unexpected and eye-catching pink walls deserve an equally impressive console to accompany them. In this 19th-century Brooklyn home by Jonathan Berger, that’s done with a high-quality cone-shaped mirror, a traditional chinoiserie dresser filled with tall branches of cherry blossoms, and a chandelier. The mod armchair mimics the ripples of a decorative shell. All together, they work wonders with a pleasant surprise.
What? no room for a console table? Try a pedestal instead. In this modern Santa Barbara adobe home designed by Corrine Mathern Studio, it fits neatly behind the stairs and adds extra strength without looking out of place. It is the perfect solution for an “entrance” apartment when the front door opens into the living room, kitchen or even bedroom.
Tamsin Johnson chose a rustic, low-slung console that can double as a bench. Thanks to its slimmer profile, it fits perfectly into the narrowest of rooms but still provides an additional surface for decoration. The glass wall behind it increases the space, making it more open and airy. An oversized painting against the wall, along with a modern lamp and a small garden of trees, add a touch of effortless elegance.

Don’t like the way your console looks? Or maybe you just want to change things? Consider this in the Reath Design entry. They covered the existing console with checkered fabric, emphasizing the tone and style of the entire house. The pendant above and the metallic vase make the vignette stand out.
A two-tier console table has the added benefit of more space for extra coffee table books, while the top shelf can be designated for essentials, like a light to turn on for late arrivals and finding all the keys. Pro tip: Hang a tall mirror horizontally to mimic the proportions of a console table, like designer Heidi Caillier did here.
While you don’t have a two-tier console table, you can still make room for extra books and decorative items. Get creative and use an accent stool when not being used as a seat.

Or, here’s a third idea that doesn’t require any extra furniture: just put the books off the floor until they’re under the table, like Nick Olsen did here. It’s incredibly stylish and keeps you organized. Then use the top of the console for a tray with essentials, especially in the office, home office or living room.
Decorate your dashboard table as you would your dresser – with flowers, decorative items and chandeliers for mood lighting. A linen rug in this living room by Heather Hilliard Design adds a nice traditional yet subtle touch to offset the modern lucite green coffee table.
Demilune (French for “half moon”) is a great console table option for small rooms or nooks and crannies. In addition, the rounded half-moon shape is smoother than the angled designs of console tables. Here, Danielle Colding Design kept it simple, putting it all in two pattern books and an open vase that takes up visual space.

If you do a lot of work around the house, consider turning your console table into a desk or dressing table. In this bedroom by Tom Scheerer, a side table provides space for additional office supplies as well as bedroom essentials, and an adjustable lamp is great for reading at the desk and in bed.
The basket on the bottom row of this console in the space created by Reath is perfect for random things like scarves and sweaters, but it also looks classy.
If you want something in the entryway that gives you the look of a console table but with the added benefit of more storage space, go for a slim dresser, as interior designer Raji Radhakrishnan did here. Drawers will allow you to hide unnecessary important things.

If you only have room for a small console table in a small entryway, styling details are even more important as they are the most eye-catching image. Here, the vintage console strikes a great balance between sophisticated and refined, vivid and accessible. This is further explained by the juxtaposition between the polished frames and the classic portraits (a perfect match with the houndstooth runner) resting on the floor and also the many wildflowers in the field vase. With just a few items, we already know what the vibe of the rest of the house will be, and we’re here for that.
If you’ve chosen a floating sofa or a sectional arrangement in a large living room, placing a console table behind it will be a good example of a change in use, as well as providing additional light for reading. Use this space created by Heather Hilliard as a template.

Create An Inviting Entryway With These Pro Tips
For tall console tables, I like the symmetry of a pair of lamps. Make sure the rest of the items are different heights to create a good flow. Try stacking some hardcover books and placing a decorative object on top to get the height you want. When choosing a plant, I like to use ones that interact with art or glass to create a layer.
Depending on the console table style, add baskets underneath for storage. They look great and do the job which is always a win! Perfect for blankets and pillows, but also ropes, toys and anything else you want hidden yet accessible.
If you don’t want to use a pair of lights or the cone isn’t long enough for that, balance the length of the lights with something tall, but make sure it’s not long enough.
