Decorations A Table For The Year 2000 – Every year our church organizes a special banquet for our widows and widowers. Each of our ministers has been matched with someone to watch and look after and this is always a special night when we all come together to honor them. The programme, menu and decor change every year and range from more formal to more relaxed themes. Since we were unable to make this event last year, we were especially looking forward to this year. I don’t generally have a role in helping out at this event, but a friend of mine did this year and asked me to join in and help her decorate for it. We quickly settled on a simple theme and today I’m sharing what we came up with for the marquee and table centerpieces with an “Oklahoma”/Western theme.

If you’re a newer reader, I often help decorate for events at our church, and when I started years ago, it was hard to find good ideas online for decorating large events when I was working with a fixed budget. So when we have events or banquets, I’ve shared stage and table decoration ideas here over the years. We’re usually pretty tight on our budget, which means the team has to be creative! And that’s when things often turn out best, right? Almost every event I help decorate for starts like this… I pull anything that might work out of my house (or my mom’s house) and load it up to take and use!

Upon arrival, this registration board with name tags on each side was the first stop. My friend had some old boots and we mixed in some little cowboy boots, the OK cutting board my son made, hats, lanterns and a cute bucket for the door prize tickets.

Several years ago I bought several black and white gingham tablecloths for my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Soon after, our church also bought several of these to use for various events… they are a nice change from the usual plain black or white tablecloths and can honestly be used for many different occasions depending on what you put them with. So between what the church owns and what I own, we usually have a lot of gingham tablecloths for larger events.

We used a red bandana at each place for napkins and then one in the middle for the centerpiece. Each table had a candle lantern, a bunch of wheat, Oklahoma chocolate, and a large ball jar with a few sunflowers. We collected the program and menu cards under the napkins and other necessary items (bread basket, s&p, coffee mug, creamer, etc.) were added to the center when meal time approached.

To decorate the stage we used 2 sets of curtain lights (clipped together at the top) hanging in front of the black curtain that is always on stage. I imagined it to look like a dark starry sky and it certainly did! This was my first time using curtain lights and I’m a fan! They have many different functions that you can set them to and they were so beautiful for the background.

We picked up some hay bales from the local feed store and then my friend and I ransacked our home for all things Oklahoma and Western! You probably recognize only a few things here-ha!

The shining star of the scene was the beloved cow! I had a pretty good idea of ​​how to set things up before I started. The night before the event things were getting ready and I was pulling things out of the church storage room to use and I spotted this random food scrap…I almost screamed with joy! I knew it was just what we needed for the finishing touch. Our event coordinator said “I almost threw it several times, but I never did…” 🙂 just wait for me! (I just had to remove the “EAT MOR CHIKIN” tag that was around his neck! #IYKYK)

My friend had an old side saddle that had been passed down through the family and we collected as many boots, hats and other rustic things as we could find.

We also prepared gift bags for each person to take home. Everything we included was from an Oklahoma company! Better Chocolate Factory is OK and they make these adorable OK chocolates that we’ve included. Each bag also held one of a variety of cowbells, rustic crosses, or stars (all from the Christmas decorations section) from Hobby Lobby, and we sent them home with their napkin (also from HL). We took a variety of Shawnee Milling Company corn and cookie mixes and added one per bag and topped it off with a custom OK card from a local graphic designer.

Here is a look at the tables just before the event started with the salads and desserts in place. Our menu included BBQ beef and chicken, baked red potatoes, green beans, salad, Texas toast and dessert – all crowd pleasers! And just an idea if you ever do a similar event – our youth choir students prepare for a mission trip every summer. At events like these, we often ask them to serve the food, refill drinks, etc. and then leave a drink bottle on the tables. Any advice on their mission trip is a win/win for everyone!

New Year’s Eve Table Decorations That’ll Impress Any Guest

Participants were encouraged to dress up in their favorite western attire if they wished. I don’t usually think about what I’m going to wear for things like this until before, but several weeks ago my friend mentioned that she got this favorite sundress on sale (cheaper at the store if you can find it!) that she had to try layering and working into a fun dress for the evening. I had seen this dress and loved it, but I knew it would be too short for me. But I knew I would love it if I could make it work as a longer skirt! I rounded two of them, cut off the top of one, sewed the pockets to what would be the bottom layer, and joined them to make a maxi skirt! I was totally making it up as I went along and it’s far from perfect, so there’s absolutely no tutorial, but I think it turned out really cute!

I shared the project on my Instagram stories as I went along and several people mentioned that they got this dress to use as their Christmas tree skirt this year…so smart! Now I might be looking for another one, ha!

It’s SO cute on her as a dress, but like I said, I’m a few inches on her, so I was worried it would be too short for me.

Deacons always provide a pool of restaurant gift cards to give away as door prizes. Our traditional music minister led everyone in singing some old “cowboy” favorites, culminating in “Oklahoma” of course! Then we had a group trivia game with some questions about Oklahoma. The program ended with our modern worship minister leading some old favorite hymns on his guitar. It was a sweet moment!

We were so pleased with how everything went and everyone seemed to enjoy the night and our guests had fun and felt special so it’s a win!
