If a beach vacation isn’t on your calendar, the next best thing is a nautical-themed dinner. Darcy Miller suggests bringing the ocean indoors with shells. “Use shells for decor, card holders, and even favors,” says Miller. In addition to decorating your table with real seashells, consider scallop shells to hold sweets and place cards made from paper prints of seashells and sea creatures. “And if the party is at night, place the vows in larger glass containers filled with sand to add a beachy vibe,” says Miller.

While sticking to one style of cookware is classic, it’s also fun to mix and match designs. “When I want to have an intimate gathering for a small group, I mix dessert plates,” says Beth Diana Smith. “One unique plate of each sample is placed on the table, and the guests sit on their favorite sample. You’d be surprised how many times people get caught up in the conversation about which model they chose. It’s a fun and unique icebreaker.”
Summer table decorations should be unique. Instead of traditional vases, experiment with items that can be used for unconventional centerpieces. Event planner David Stark recommends everything from cake stands to pitchers that can create a visually appealing tiered summer table setting effect. “Although the shapes and proportions may differ from individual containers, if the containers are in the same general color and material palette, they will work beautifully as a single set,” he says.
If you’re looking for an easy way to create an elegant summer table, consider using a beautiful flower as a centerpiece, as Darcy Miller did in this image. You can use the same flowers for each setting or mix them up for even more visual interest. Choose neutral napkins to keep the focus on the flowers.
Masculine Dinner Party Ideas
There’s nothing like a tablecloth to take your summer dining table to the next level. Designer Anna Hepfer especially likes this colorful design. “Manuel Canovas gave this traditional dress an edge with a beautiful fuchsia/orange color combination,” she says.
Summer is about fruit. Entertaining expert Darcy Miller likes to incorporate seasonal produce like cherries, watermelon or citrus into her summer table. “Along with cute snacks and decorations, you can fill cookies with candied fruit, fill plates with fresh items as centerpieces, and print out paper versions for cards, menus, or hanging wreaths,” says Miller.
A centerpiece of fruit is always a good idea, but who says vegetables can’t be, too? “Vegetables as a centerpiece look very summery,” says designer Beth Diana Smith. “I like to use bunches of cilantro (or anything green and leafy) in textured bowls, corn (on the husk) in long plates, or bowls filled with pineapple or mango as centerpieces.

It’s official: backyard party season is upon us, and I know I’m not the only one who wants to shout “Hooray!” from the rooftops every time I step outside and feel the sun on my skin. We’re in that blissful early summer moment where I want to eat every meal outside. And this year, after the winter that dragged on while we huddled behind masks and zooms, we feel especially celebratory. As we emerge from our socially distanced caves and begin to reunite with friends and family, my focus is on bright seasonal recipes and simple table setting ideas to lift the mood. It doesn’t take much: think a beautiful tablecloth or a set of handmade plates that take center stage on an otherwise minimalist table.

When I set the dinner table, I usually set the base with favorite things I already own (like this linen tablecloth and ceramic pitcher) and then add a few new items that I add to my collection each season.
