Super Cool Diy Christmas Centerpiece For Your Festive Table Decor

As I write this, I’m looking at the pile of Halloween decorations that are actively stalking our house right now and somehow haven’t made it to the attic even though we’re already in November.

I absolutely love the holidays, and I throw myself into decorating for all of them with obsession and enthusiasm. I love entertaining the family, creating a little magic for the kids and just cheering them on. However, I hate the time it takes to get it all out and shove it back into the worthless pile of junk it came from.

I wanted to make some DIY Christmas table decorations that would hold a few key boxes:

Diy Christmas Decorations You Can Easily Pull Off

The inspiration came almost immediately when I was carrying the groceries home. We live in Charleston, South Carolina and have a magnolia tree in our yard. Magnolia trees have broad, glossy green leaves with a velvety rust-colored underside, making them a favorite Southern material for wedding decorations and holiday garlands. Why not incorporate something from the front yard for a spectacular garland?

I like to forage and use materials that are local to my area, but you can totally recreate these DIY Christmas table decorations with a variety of plants that thrive no matter where you live. Loquat leaves are the same size and would also work well for cards. Boxwood and pine will be no less beautiful garlands. And pittosporum variegated (a popular choice for hedges) would be great.

If you need to replenish your garland material (don’t harvest so much that you kill your magnolia), try to choose something that can be easily reused or dried, such as gypsophila or eucalyptus.

I’m also obsessed with the amount of books that are thrown away and piled up in stores every year, so I wanted to use some unwanted novels as creative material. For this Christmas tablescape, I used vintage books to create depth and individual book pages as a DIY table stand.

I highly recommend making sure your board book pages are free of saucy love scenes. The first book I chose for this DIY would be a rather scandalous and embarrassing conversation.

There are so many options for DIY Christmas table decorations. Here are a few of my favorites and the ones I used for this DIY Christmas landscape.

Easy Diy Holiday Centerpieces To Dress Up Your Table

I’ve outlined the steps I took to prepare this DIY Christmas landscape. Use this as a guide if you want, but you can always make your own using things you already have.

Remove all labels from jars or yogurt containers with Goo Gone. Then wash and let dry or use a blow dryer to speed up this part.

When the jars are dry, decorate them to your taste with a gold pen. You can also tie a ribbon around them, spray paint them or etch the glass if you like. After the paint dries, place a candle in each jar and set it aside.

Tear out a few pages from the book you intended for the table runner. Place the pages in the center of the table to determine the best width configuration, keeping in mind the plates and layout as well.

I had a farmer’s table, so two pages side by side lengthwise were the perfect width. I decided to place them with torn edges for a softer look. Next, decide if you want the table runner to drape down the sides of the table or to run the length of the table top.

Tape the pages of the book together to make your table runner, remembering to turn it over so the side of the tape isn’t visible. (If your track doesn’t drape over the sides, you may not need much, if any, tape.) This should only take you a few minutes.

How To Make A Layered Holiday Centerpiece

Use a damp cloth to wipe down the leaves you will be using for the cards. Let it dry a little, then write the names of the guests with a pen.

Time to make your garland! This will be the most time-consuming part of this DIY. Measure your string or twine to the desired length of your garland. If you’re short on time, remember that you can easily make shorter garlands to fit between artfully arranged vintage books instead of garlands taking up the entire table.

Gather small pieces of greenery near the stems and secure them by wrapping the wire around the stems and then wrapping it around the twine. Stack each section on top of the previous section to hide any exposed wire or rope. Repeat this process until you have the desired length of garland, remember that you can always mask the bare spots once the tablescape is complete. (Don’t get carried away with this step.)

Best Diy Christmas Centerpieces That Anyone Can Make

Arrange your vintage books or found books from your personal library in artful stacks along the table, keeping in mind that people will likely want to easily browse your centerpieces and talk to each other.

Place glass promise holders on top of the books and fill in any bare or weak spots on the garland by tucking in extra leaves.

Glue together coloring pages for baby coasters and add crayons to a bundle of twine or an extra glass yogurt jar.

And last but not least, set the table. Add place cards, light candles and pour yourself a glass of wine. You did it!

After the festive evening, it’s time to responsibly dispose of homemade Christmas decorations (or put away those that can be used in the future).

Blow out the candles and save them for another use. Add the book pages to the trash or compost pile. Provided you didn’t tear the pages out of vintage books, use them to decorate elsewhere or donate them to a store for another collector or DIY enthusiast to treasure.

Save the silverware for another party or lend it to a neighbor who can use it for their gathering. You can also return them to a thrift store or even offer them in the Buy Nothing group. I bet they’ll be caught in no time, especially if you show them the pictures
