When it comes to planning a birthday party, I love inexpensive and simple DIY projects. After a quick stop at Meijer, I got everything I needed for a summer luau, all from American Greetings, in the card and party section.

American Greetings Tissue Paper comes in 20″x25″ sheets, in packs of 6 or 20. To make a pineapple Pom-Pom, start with a stack of yellow tissue paper – about 6 sheets. Cut it in half so the stack is now 10″x25″.

Fold the tissue paper every 1.5 inches, accordion style. Don’t worry about the exact folds, it doesn’t matter if they are perfectly even.

Then fold the stack of paper in half and wrap the floral wire around the middle. Attach the cable. If you are going to hang the Pom-Poms, tie fishing line to the wire.

Take a single layer of tissue paper and pull it apart from the stack. Repeat for each layer leaving the Pom-Pom in a pineapple shape.

Then cut out pineapple leaves, using the template as a guide, and attach them to the pineapple with hot glue.

Download the pineapple and watermelon images at the end of the post. Cut off the larger fruit to use as a bag lining. Once cut, fold the fruit in half.

Then fill the bag with the goodies and fold the top of the bag closed. Slide the top over the fold and sew it to the pocket.

Meijer had several colors of American Greetings goodie bags and I chose a bright green to tie in with the watermelon rind and pineapple leaves.

Now cut the small pineapple and watermelons for straw decorations. Make two holes in each fruit, one hole at the top and one hole at the bottom.

Feeling ready for summer? Well, I have one more bonus tip! Instead of buying tablecloths, buy a wrapping paper roll. I chose a green American Greetings stripe ribbon from the party section at Meijer.

Using wrapping paper as a table decoration is one of my favorite party tricks. There are many more pattern options for wrapping paper than tablecloths.

The American Greetings birthday card selection was perfect for this glamorous party. They have cards for every age – generic cards and cards with famous characters. I loved all the children’s cards with happy colors and glitter! Who doesn’t love a little glitter?

Combine fresh food with a variety of silver and glass containers and summer blue linens to recreate this festive look, which—you guessed it—feels right at home in fields of flowers or crops. Leave a pair of scissors at each place setting to encourage your guests to go out and pick flowers to fill the empty vases on your table.

Throw a porch party with the neighbors with terracotta pieces and pots used to serve dishes, centerpieces and food. You can even DIY your own cake stand by flipping a large planter saucer over an upside down planter.

The bandana “mats” at home set an appropriately casual tone, and the cowboy boot “pots” amp up the Lone Star factor a lot. (Just place a glass full of water inside each shoe.) Plastic toy horses (spray-painted gold) run—make that pull!—the length of the table. Finally, a chic leather card with pouch case, filled with brass flatware and paired with rope-trimmed melamine flatware, ushers in the rustic look.

This whimsical table pays homage to the Minnesota State Fair. Filled with sunny gingham and birch wood cutlery, the small “placemat” tray is a smart choice for buffet-style gatherings. Balls and playing cards, casually tossed under the table, add to the casual atmosphere. But the prettiest of the state fairs is the “cotton” tab, which is simply a wad of cotton stuffing covered in pink floral spray paint (available at craft stores), then placed in a paper cone.

A simple box of Old Bay Seasoning—a Mid-Atlantic must!—enlivened this table’s relaxed, coastal feel and color palette. Here, the cans used for the corsage flowers sit atop a kraft paper tablecloth with an appropriate brown (but not kitsch) print. Spiced local favorites like hand plates and striped bistro napkins add a bit of charm, and a simple lemon card (paired with a fingernail cracker) offers a sunny yellow pop.

Inspired by the lush green landscape of The Big Island, this blooming tablescape is a joyful mix of patterns (flowers, coral) and textures (racks, bamboo). The embroidered fan place card is pretty and practical, and other tropical touches like tiki cups, paper umbrellas, and plain old pineapples add the “aloha” factor.

Boston reader Rachel Norman shared this high-meets-low approach: pretty dinnerware paired with plain newsprint and everyday linens. A sprinkling of painted shells accentuates the waterfront look.

Filled with dill and Queen Anne’s lace, an old fishbowl finds new use as a planter and a vintage shop window is reborn as a menu holder. A camp blanket makes an unexpectedly lovely summer tablecloth.

Rustic hay bales make for a more appropriate theme than basic folding chairs. Get them at a local farm supply store.

Add a cheerful touch to the summer table with this patchwork style runner. Place enough bandanas to fit the length of a table, leaving a little overhang, and stitch together. To support the runner, cut an old cotton tablecloth (any light color will do) to match its width and length. Sew along the edges or iron on.

Improvise a “fabric” tablecloth by crossing strips of burlap from a garden supply store and then laying lengths of white crumpled cheesecloth over them. The effect is reminiscent of antique linen scavenged from grandma’s attic.

A basket full of fresh citrus serves as a centerpiece instead of flowers. Two striped tablecloths offer a more relaxed feel than a single tablecloth.
