How To Arrange Coffee Table Decor – I suck at beautiful coffee table decor! As I took a good look at the two coffee tables in our house, I realized that there are five essential decor items that I use all the time, and I’m going to share each coffee table decor idea with you today!
I always use a large tray on my coffee tables. forever I love how they keep everything neatly together, and if you want to use your coffee table for playing games or putting food out, you can pick it all up by lifting the tray. Trays are a great way to add some contrasting texture or color to keep things interesting.
How To Arrange Coffee Table Decor
For our family room coffee table, I went with a large 28″ square wooden tray that takes up most of the coffee table but still leaves room for my husband to throw his feet up (we put a designated “foot pad” around him. Join in – lol!):

I had a hard time finding a square tray with a large handle that I liked, but I finally found the perfect one on Etsy. The store where I bought mine no longer exists, but you can find an almost identical tray at They offer them in a variety of colors in a velvety matte or glossy sheen finish. Such a large tray is expensive, but I’ve had mine for years. I like that if I change my color scheme in the future I can repaint it instead of buying a new tray.
On our ottoman/coffee table in our living room, I often use lightly woven trays to add some shine and texture. My favorite is a great size and great price for this large tray:

FYI: Add felt pads to the bottom of woven trays to make sure they don’t scratch your coffee table! These are some other favorite coffee table tops that work beautifully (
I use flowers and natural elements throughout my home because they add life like nothing else can, so it’s no wonder these are one of my favorite coffee table decorating ideas! In summer, when many flowers bloom in our garden, I place small bouquets of fresh flowers on our coffee table:
You can add even more life and personality by placing your flowers in something unique, like this copper swan tank of mine (you can find similar planters too):

If you don’t have flowers to clip from your garden, pick up a $5 bundle of tulips at the grocery store or, for low maintenance, add a plant. This snake plant that sits on our living room coffee table is the best – seriously unkillable:
And I love that I have a stack of books at the end of our coffee table – it’s another way to bring nature into this space.
No shame in getting fake! I recently bought raspberries and two of them make a nice little arrangement:

And after moving my snake plant upstairs, I used these three fake eucalyptus branches (seen) on our living room ottoman:
You can also use other natural elements to add life – a bowl of pine cones, feathers or marine elements like driftwood, shells and coral are just a few ideas. The best thing about natural ingredients is that you can find them right outside your door and use them for free!
Books are one of my favorite coffee table decorating ideas. They’re perfect for adding a layered look and it’s nice to have some interesting coffee table books for your family and guests to pick up and read. Being a design enthusiast, most of me (big surprise) is design oriented. Other good choices are books about the area you live in, your favorite state or country to vacation in, or a favorite hobby.

You might even consider taking some photos of yourself from your phone and computer and taking one of those — these are my future coffee table goals! And if you want to add some color or pattern to your coffee table, you can easily do so using a favorite fabric scrap:
And if you’re a design buff like me and looking for great coffee table books, some of these have great content and look great on the outside (
Along with some stacked coffee table books, I always add a book topper or two. It can be anything from a large gold cantilever (similar available) to a decorative magnifying glass like the one I used in my cloth-bound book, to a small piece of coral like this one:

Decorative boxes are great! There are so many beautiful options and they are great for storing things on the table that you don’t want. Extra TV remotes on the coffee table in our family room, our lighting remote, and my photo flash drives, which I now and then need when I’m on the laptop in the sectional:
Once you have these supplies, it’s time to have some fun and add some quirky things you like! For me, it’s brass animals (#obsession) like this pair of brass cranes (also available):

But for you it could be something related to your favorite hobby or a piece that has some history and special meaning. Put it all together and you have a coffee table that will be the star of your space!

I regularly get questions about our beautiful vintage two-tiered coffee table (click here to read more about it) that I found at a thrift store for $25 and how to figure out what to dress it up with. That’s why I want to talk about how to style a two-tiered coffee table today in a separate blog post.
My coffee table is quite long and has two levels and this type of table goes well with a long sofa and loveseat. That is usually what most people buy in homeware stores and coincidentally this combination fits well in our living room. You can see that the size is perfect in my photos and you can also check out one of my recent blog posts where I show you how I can decorate my living room in four different ways (click here) using the same key pieces of furniture.

Decorating Your Coffee Table — 2 Ladies & A Chair
I think some people get overwhelmed with decorating a coffee table, which is why this topic is often covered in blogs and magazines. And this type of coffee table has two surfaces, which makes some people very stressed. I see a two-tiered coffee table, or as some call it a two-tiered coffee table, an opportunity to showcase some of the things I love.
It can be a really big thing, you just have to be careful not to overfill it and make it look messy. I enjoy this type of decorating and find it therapeutic. So please don’t take it too seriously because you can always mix it again if something doesn’t go right.
I’m aiming for a collected look with a little extra fun. I’m very happy with how our coffee table looks and so I haven’t changed it much.
