E—the Instagram phenomenon known as #layflat. If you don’t know it by name, here’s a description that should be familiar to any design-loving grammarian: a top-down view of the well-designed desk, which often includes cascading stacks of books, artfully placed accessories and maybe a photogenic food. But Leslie Banker, leader of the new guard in traditional design and daughter of famed New York decorator Pamela Banker, is ready to show us that the special table style has been studied, refined and learned long before the hashtag.
Best Ways To Decorate A Coffee Table
“A room will only look finished when the tables are set,” says Banker. Anyone who has ever filled an empty room with their favorite furniture, only to be surprised when the end result didn’t quite look right, knows this simple observation to be true. The trick is knowing what to do about it. “Having an original and well-curated collection of objects on side tables and, to a lesser extent, a coffee table brings character to a room,” she says. And here comes her time-tested advice. Read on to complete your own table design master class.
1. Arrange in ascending order. “When assembling a table, choose items of different heights and shapes,” says Baker. “Place low objects closer to the front of the table and taller objects at the back. On a table in the center of a room, place the tallest objects in the center of the table.” like a classic bust, stone obelisk, orchid to create height. A sculptural lamp (like the one above) is a great choice for console tables.
2. Mix up your materials “A combination of stone, metal, ceramic and glass adds depth to a room,” says the designer. A classic formula?’ You have some small books placed beside the brass candlesticks and a glass vase.’

3. Edit DownPicture Frames “Choose one, maybe two, framed photos for a coffee table,” says Baker. “Avoid having picture frames on every table in the room, and feel free to have zero picture frames.” Imagine your parents’ entryway table or a photo gallery filled with a piano top, then channel the exact opposite.
4. Creating Collections. “They’re versatile. Tables are the perfect place to display a small collection of anything from miniature ceramic elephants to lacquer incense holders,” says Banker. “There’s always a story behind a collection, and it helps personalize the room. If there’s one small item you love, having three or five of them will add to the impact.”
5. No need to break the bank. “The things in your offices don’t have to be expensive,” he says. “It just has to be things that you find beautiful and that tell a part of your story. It’s a place to give something simple that appeals to you a chance to shine.” Eddie Ross, whose New York apartment is pictured above, shares amazing thrift store finds on his Instagram.

6. Display travel memories. “I have sea urchin shells that I collected as a child on a trip to Sardinia in a silver bowl on a coffee table in my living room,” says the designer. “Not only are the shells beautiful, but they make me happy every time I look at them. I also have on a side table a pair of small brass bowls that my in-laws brought back from a trip to Beirut. The bowls are attractive. They have a story and are perfect for filling with nuts when guests come over.”
7. Consider composition.”A desk should look complete and thoughtful, but not cluttered,” Bankermandates. “Think of balancing objects and colors on a table and creating a composition as if you were an artist creating a collage.” Instagram stylist Patrick Janelle’s floating table (above) features a mix of books, art, small sculptures, and fresh flowers, all in different heights, textures, and design styles.
8. Use Family Treasures “Show off heirlooms, instead of keeping them in deep storage,” she says. “If there is an old snuffbox, enamel or other item that has a family history, it will be perfect to display on a coffee table.” I was excited to put together some yellow and gray table design ideas and inspiration! Both are incredibly versatile colors, whether used alone or blended together. I often use gray as a neutral because it’s soft yet moody and works in many shades. When you layer it with yellow, which is such a happy color, it just visually excites me. After such a sad year in the world, this combination of colors and energies looks like what we all need!

When I think of gray, I think of how it’s in the same family as silver. It’s a neutral color and will look good with anything you pair it with. Cooler colors like blue and navy work well, and metals of all shades stand out beautifully against a gray background. When gray is combined with yellow it is such an interesting combination. The colors come from opposite ends of the energy spectrum – to me it’s like seeing hot and cold come together.
Yellow is part of the gold family – it has a sunny, bright, happy energy. Yellow can stand on its own as the focal point of any design, but it’s just as effective with an added pop of color. You can combine it with other bright colors for big and bold energy or with soft whites, pastels and neutrals for a calm, peaceful and peaceful feel.
Ultimate Gray & Illuminating Yellow Tabletop Decor Ideas — Eddie Zaratsian Lifestyle & Design
For my Ultimate Gray table, I used a monochromatic palette with a mix of textures and surfaces. I paired a soft plush charcoal table linen with smooth dove colored plates with a matte finish and a textured linen napkin. To deepen the palette I added touches of honey to the silverware, candles and votive holders. The event flowers – a variety of painted and dyed flowers – were grey. (Read my tips for designing with a monochrome palette here!)
For my Illuminating Yellow table, I used not only bright yellow, but buttercream, gold, sandy yellow and touches of nude to add character and texture. Using variations of yellows and creams really allows each individual color to pop. I always recommend playing with the shades and tones of whatever color you’re working with – you might be surprised at the combinations you like best! My favorite details of this table design were the delicate yellow flowers used in each setting. They added such a modern and creative touch to a very elegant atmosphere.
