Tip: If you’re shopping for a new coffee table, consider a two-tiered one. That little shelf doubles your visual space and can be used as storage or to display more of your treasures.

How To Style A Round Coffee Table

Before I go any further, I want to remind you that what follows is a summary of ideas. There is no right or wrong way to arrange your coffee table. Follow your instincts. Use items that speak to you, items that reflect your family’s interests, and most importantly, items that reflect your own style. I love neutral decor, so that’s what I always use on our coffee table…with pops of blue, of course. If you’re a fan of color, definitely incorporate that into your coffee table decor. What you’re thinking is this: when someone walks into the room, they should be able to tell your style just by looking at your coffee table!

The versatility of the trays is amazing and they make the perfect start to any coffee table vignette. There is no hard and fast rule as to what size or shape to use. It’s fine to use a round pan on a round table…and equally fine to use a square or rectangular pan.

Printers are the most important printing tool. Start by placing a tray on the coffee table. Anything you add later will have a cohesive and elegant feel because the tray holds everything together. Stack the items on top of each other and make sure they are different heights.

Coffee tables and books go hand in hand. There have been a few times in my life when I bought a book because I liked the cover. Books with beautiful covers bring personality and uniqueness to a coffee table… so collect your prettiest books, or those with special meaning, and start stacking. Garden books, decorative books or flower books are perfect for this!

Think outside the box when it comes to lighting. Of course, candles are wonderful, but a candle is not the only good thing in a lamp. A small basket full of eggs, a pot of fresh or artificial greenery, moss balls of various sizes, a scented pot, pine cones or cotton balls are some ideas of ways to add interest to the lamp. Bowls and baskets can be used for mixing, just like trays, but add interesting shape and texture. A large, neutral bowl can be used literally anywhere in your decor, but it’s a unique tool for setting up a coffee table. Fill it with greenery or put a pitcher in it for a classic farmhouse look. I’ve had the bowl above for at least 20 years, maybe more. It was a birthday present for a friend and is one of the most precious jewelry accessories. It hangs around our house, but most of the time, it lives on the coffee table.

When it comes to layering, baskets do the same thing as bowls, but their biggest advantage is adding texture. If you have a dark coffee table, consider using a light colored basket for contrast. Create unexpected things and try to add something high.

The best way to take your coffee table decor to the next level is to include any kind of natural or faux elements. My first choice is always fresh flowers, but I also like to use artificial greenery or a combination of both. Something green, whether it’s new or fake, brings life to your coffee table decor that you can’t get otherwise.

Natural ingredients are also a great way to bring something into the season. Apple blossoms in spring, peonies in summer, sunflowers in autumn, pine cones or fresh Christmas pine. The picture below shows the coffee table in our house on Sutton Place when my peonies were in bloom. It’s super easy to do and of all the pictures I’ve taken over the years, this is one of my favorites.

I always use a large tray on my coffee tables. Always. I love that it keeps everything nice and if you want to clear your coffee table to use it to play a game or set up a food spread, you can grab it all with a simple flick of the tray. Trails are also a great way to add texture or color to make things interesting.

For the coffee table in our family room, I opted for a large 28″ square wooden tray that takes up most of the coffee table but still leaves room for my husband to put his feet up (we keep a “cushion for legs” designated because it does that with – lol!):

I had the hardest time finding a square pan with a large handle that I liked, but I ended up finding the perfect one on Etsy. The store where I bought it is no longer there, but you can find an almost identical tray. They are offered in a variety of colors in a velvety, matte or glossy finish. This great mattress is expensive, but I will have mine for years. I love that if I change my color scheme in the future, I can just repaint instead of having to buy a new tray.

Living Rooms Without Coffee Tables

On the ottoman/coffee table in our living room, I used mostly light woven trays to add some light and texture. My favorite is  which is a good size and great price for this great tray:

FYI, be sure to add felt pads to the bottom of the woven trays to make sure they don’t scratch your coffee table! These are some favorite coffee table trays that will also work beautifully (

I use flowers and natural elements throughout my home because they add life like nothing else and it’s no wonder one of my favorite coffee table decor ideas! In the summer, when we have many flowers blooming in our yard, I keep a small bouquet of flowers on the coffee table:

You can add even more life and character by placing the flowers in something unique, like this bronze swan vase of mine (you can also find similar planters) that I absolutely love:

If you don’t have cut flowers from your yard, pick up a $5 tulip bouquet at the hardware store, or for less maintenance, add a plant. This snake plant on our living room coffee table is the best – seriously underrated:

And I love that I also have it on the stack of books at the end of our coffee table – it’s another way to bring nature into this space.

There’s no shame in faking it! I recently bought some raspberries and two of them make the cutest little arrangement:

And after moving my snake plant upstairs, I used three of these fake eucalyptus branches (seen) on the ottoman in our living room:

You can also use other natural elements to add life – a bowl of pine cones, feathers or elements from the sea such as wood, seashells and coral.
