When she began building her mother’s Day of the Dead altar seven years ago, Marcela Valladolid had no immediate connection—emotional or otherwise—to the annual tradition.
“I grew up with strict Catholic parents, so building an altar rooted in the pre-Hispanic Aztec tradition was not part of our tradition,” recalls the Chula Vista chef, writer and television personality. “It’s weird that, being a Mexican chef, I keep getting asked to attend events and click across the US border to use the holiday to promote a product or service. I felt disconnected from my culture and these opportunities felt opportunistic and inaccurate, so I began to study and understand what Dia de Muertos was really about.
“Gradually now, the tradition has become one of the most important days of the year for me. A: This year, with a more neutral color palette, I might feel like I’m breaking out of the norm. But the fact is that the more colorful altars are the result of the modernization of the ceremony.
