I lived in New Orleans for a year and I think everyone should experience Mardi Gras at least once. The float parade, the ball toss/catch, the street party: there’s nothing quite like it in the United States.

How To Make A Mardi Gras Cheeseboard

I have fond memories of trying to catch beads and other trinkets thrown from parade floats and stepping on them so no one could pick them up. You learn very quickly that you need to step on objects instead of trying to pick them up, because someone else will step on your hand if you don’t!

Mardi Gras is synonymous with fun. What better entertainment for your next gathering! I plan to have lots of friends and family there. Therefore, creating a buffet table is the best way to serve food for this type of gathering.

If you are not familiar with Mardi Gras, when planning a party you should know that purple (for justice), green (for faith) and gold (for strength) are the colors associated with the holiday. I understand that these colors have been associated with Mardi Gras since the late 19th century.

Mardi Gras Party Ideas

As with most holidays and events, there are things associated with them. Below are the ones we used at the Mardi Gras buffet:

For my carnival buffet, I used a white double sheet as a base to completely cover and hide my dining table. To incorporate the carnival colors, I used a gold tablecloth as the main layer and added a dark purple scarf I found at a thrift store as an accent.

Then I added the carnival decorations. I’m on a tight budget so I decided to make a few things and keep it pretty cheap.

I found the Fleur de Lis cutouts on sale at a local craft store and painted them gold.

At the same time, I found a pack of plain white masks. So I decided to decorate them in Mardi Gras colors that would go well with the buffet and the theme. The carnival masks were so much fun to make!

To tie it all together and make it “over the top” I put purple, gold and green beads around the sideboard. I also added a large eye-catching vase filled with bright floral pieces and dark purple feathers. I apologize for posting so late. About a week ago, I ordered a carnival table item (that I couldn’t resist) from a seller who shall remain nameless for now. They promised me delivery last week, then yesterday and then today. Apparently it was delivered from 9:45. I called every post office I could get a number for and I believe there is an APB ready for the package and my tracking number should go under the local news right after schools close tonight at 11pm. Well, needless to say he hasn’t arrived yet and it’s after 7pm.

If it ever gets here tonight, I’ll post some updated pics to show you, and if it doesn’t get here tonight, you’ll have to be surprised next year. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the carnival meal I’ve prepared for you and enjoy the rest of the evening.

And then they serve traditional Italian lasagna di Carnevale, not the expected Mardi Gras fare; gumbo, jambalaya, grits and beignets.

I will explain about the lasagna… During Lent, Christians must fast and avoid rich foods such as meat. Lasagna di Carnevale is filled with meat and cheese and is meant to be served as a very pleasant pre-fast meal. My grandmother prepared a different version of this dish every year, because the idea of this dish is to eat all the meat you have at home before fasting. Some years it’s just ground beef and ricotta, but other years the lasagna included sausage, salami, mozzarella and prosciutto; so there is no special recipe. Let your imagination and the contents of the fridge guide you.

Besides the lasagna, grandma prepared a carnival cake with almonds, olive oil and citrus fruits – see the recipe below from

Another common Mardi Gras food is pancakes. This tradition began in the Middle Ages as a way to consume milk, butter and eggs that did not last during Lent. It is also traditional to toss pancakes with a coin in one hand to ensure prosperity throughout the year.

I’m all for keeping the tradition, but throwing pancakes in my house is a tradition I don’t participate in; but don’t worry if you’re in the mood – the kids will love it.
