Ottoman Coffee Table Decor Ideas – I’ve never been a big fan of ottomans… Yes, ottomans can be comfortable when you want to put your feet up while watching TV, but I like having a solid, stable surface to put things on when you add some color and textures. living room. Well…when I was shopping for our new sectional, Vince convinced me to get a matching ottoman (it’s HUGE by the way…it’s 51″ x 51″!). I don’t regret it at all…I love that the ottoman can be pulled up against the couch to make a huge bed-like seat for movie nights, but I struggled to find a place to put my glass. water or my cup recently…and I ALWAYS carry some kind of drink with me.
Well…I decided to make a coffee table to sit on top of our ottoman as a comfortable and functional centerpiece for our living room.

We got a 4′ x 8′ piece of red oak from Home Depot (I would have preferred white oak but it was out of stock) and told them to cut the plywood into two 2′ x 8′ pieces. Getting into my little SUV was quite an adventure… Note: borrowing the truck for future projects that require larger pieces of plywood.
Modern Ottoman Coffee Tables
I started by laying the plywood on top of our ottoman and taking some measurements. The 2′ x 8′ piece was the perfect size for my 54″ long coffee table with 21″ legs.
Then I cut the plywood into three pieces with my hacksaw. The Home Depot associate warned us that the oak pieces were easy and recommended we buy a saw blade with smaller, more teeth for finer cuts, but we didn’t want to spend too much money and decided to take a chance. He was absolutely right… The sheet metal definitely split where it touched the wood, but I was able to fill the small cracks later with wood filler. If you are cutting oak with a hacksaw, I recommend that you lay the wood on the surface of the saw, point down, so you don’t split the wood on the side you want to expose.
I joined the parts with liquid nails and angle brackets, and when that dried, I secured it from above with wood screws. If I were to do this project again, I would learn how to use pocket holes so the screws are hidden.

I filled the holes and covered the screws with wood filler, sanded the entire table and dusted with a cloth to prepare for the stain.
I then sanded some red oak edges to cover the plywood layers on all the edges. This was definitely the most tedious step in the whole project, but it really added to the look of the table and was well worth the time.
I finally applied my wood conditioner and then my stain (Varathane Expresso) after trying over 10 colors to find the perfect shade….

And VOILA!!! Now I have a place to put my drinks all day and I can still use the ottoman when needed!
If you want a waterproof surface for extra protection, you can add a coat of polyurethane after the stain dries. I decided to skip this step for now, mostly because I was too excited to see the finished product and start using the table, but I plan to do so in the near future.
Now you’ll find me sitting on the sofa with my feet propped up on the ottoman and drinking tea on the coffee table all day. I’ve talked many times about decorating your home with things you love, seasonal rotation and redecorating. Today’s post is about 3 ways to style a coffee table or ottoman. I had fun experimenting with this, using many of my favorite pieces.
Live Edge Coffee Tables That Transform The Living Room
I am constantly looking for new and different ways to change things in our home. It’s like a studio here – I shoot blog posts regularly, always bringing in and rotating different “props” for different stories. My family is pretty used to it by now!
I recently shared different ways to design a console table; It’s a post full of style tips that I think you’ll love.
When I’m decorating, I’ll always use a new accessory I got and add it to a combo, or I’ll add a new design book. Honestly, I get stuck in my decorating ways, and sometimes when I love something so much, I won’t change it at all.

As you know, blue and white is one of my favorites and I can’t get enough of it.
Especially with the abundance currently available on the market – I’m always on the lookout for new pieces to add to my collection.

It’s so funny that I haven’t used it as a grouping on our ottoman until now. But I can say that I LOVE this look.
I could live in a blue and white house! Since we’re in the middle of summer, what better way to do it?
Many of my pieces I picked up here and there, some from vintage stores, some “borrowed” from my mom’s collection, many I got in Chinatown, and some from different retailers like HomeSense (or HomeGoods), Pier 1 Imports, or Bombay Company.

To add dimension and interest and reproduce the summer look, I added some coral, sand dollars and shells.
Not everyone collects blue and white, or has enough pieces to collect them like this, but the idea of styling a coffee table like this is to showcase a monochromatic collection; a set of accessories and vases within the same color palette.
Look around your home and collect items in the same color family; blue and green can also work with this look as they are both cool colors.

Or maybe you want to stick to a light palette if you have brightly colored pieces in your home.
Whether it’s one color, two or three, it’s important to group similar items together for this look.
Then add three or four other items to break it up, like I did with the coral and other accessories.

Make sure that if you burn candles like this, never leave them unattended or even think about lighting them when children or pets are around!
Honestly, this look is super easy to pull off and can work any time of year.
Best of all, it’s just as beautiful when the candles are not lit. Keep the lights on when it’s a quiet evening.
White Coffee Tables To Refresh Your Living Room
Get creative and use things you have around… mason jars, glassware – even wine glasses with tea lights can work for this look.
Mix it up with tall candlesticks – I used different metals mixed together, but you can use any type you like.
Small and low bows are key elements for this look. If you don’t have one, use lowball or juice glasses; I know you all have!

If you don’t have many books, you can start with magazines: fashion magazines, decorating magazines or National Geographic would make an amazing impression with those beautiful yellow spines.

You can play around with your color palette – mine uses black and white, different shades of blue and some green with a hint of brown – all neutrals.
The idea is to create a “collected” look of your favorite things. Make sure you have a cohesive color palette when combining items to avoid a cluttered look.
Keep in mind that what you use will add color; so the book above is something you want to pay attention to.
