Paper Table Decorations Free Standing – We wanted to use paper lanterns at the wedding, but we didn’t want the strings hanging from the ceiling. We decided to make paper lantern centerpieces for each table. They have a heavy concrete base to keep the lantern from tipping over, PVC pipe stems, wire to hang the lantern, and tulle to cover the base.
These paper lantern decorations were one of the ways we were able to stay within the $2000 budget for our daughter’s wedding.

To make the base a little deeper, I cut a piece of cardboard 2″ high enough to go around the pie pan. I wrapped it with duct tape to keep it from falling apart.

Mix the concrete in a small bowl. I used a large salad bowl to mix the concrete. Looks good enough for a base.
Smooth the surface. It won’t be seen so it doesn’t have to be perfect.
Leave the cement for several hours until it is ready. Once the cement is ready, you can remove the cardboard panels and pie pans.

Don’t worry about the holes in the cement, you will cover them. I spray painted the white base to hide all the colors through the fabric. Cut a circle of felt the same size as the base, then glue it to the bottom of the base to protect the surface of the table or tablecloth it will be used on.
Bend the wire like a shepherd’s bug. I wrapped the top around a gallon can for a sample.
Bend the hook at the bent end with pliers. This is where you will hang the globe.

Place the PVC cover in the vise and drill three holes in it, using a drill bit the same size or slightly larger than your wire.

Cement base. How much wire goes through the cap depends on how far you want the globe to be from the base. When you want it, you’ll use hot glue to hold it in place.

Wrap some tulle or other fabric around the base to hide it. We used white, but other colors can easily be substituted. You can also replace other colors of paper lanterns with white.
