Living in rural Maine, like anywhere else, has its disadvantages and advantages. The main disadvantage is the absence of target(s) within a two-hour radius, and the main advantage is the minimal daily motivation to take advantage of the surrounding natural beauty. We actually have a working Christmas tree farm on our property, so I pick up plenty of acorns, pine cones, dried fruit, and (of course) fragrant Christmas trees on my morning walks. So far, I’ve been amazed at what I’ve been trying to create, especially thanks to Pinterest. It’s crazy what a little metallic spray paint and glitter can do!

), and our favorite wine for this season is the Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2016, which can be considered the first taste of a new vintage, the first wine of harvest, and an indicator of the quality of that year’s vintage. That fresh, fruity, and joyful festival, always released on the third Thursday of November, makes it an annual tradition that also heralds the start of the holiday season. Vibrant bright red fruit is always the signature color

A close second favorite wine is the 2016 Georges DuBoeuf Beaujolais-Village, which goes well with almost anything, including burgers, pizza, grilled fish and Asian food. If you’re not familiar with Beaujolais wines, Beaujolais-Villages is a great entry-level wine for someone new to Beaujolais, especially since the price point is higher than what you’d expect from a French or California Pinot Noir. Plus, it makes a great fall sangria base!

Perhaps the most important part of any table decoration is a beautiful festive centerpiece. Kyle patiently followed me around six stores until we found it

Tall wooden flower boxes at Home Depot. I know you can find similar boxes on Etsy, but we had an early Thanksgiving with Kyle’s mom last week, so I didn’t have an extra two weeks for shipping. As a box filler, you can use:

Place white pillar candles in a box for interesting table lighting, preferably contrasting two different sizes. You can also experiment with candle wax, but I don’t like the look of it. I personally wanted the table to look a little more rustic, so I wore white tablecloths and opted for a gold runner with scattered white candle votives instead.

In addition to the rustic centerpiece, I wanted to add a little more greenery to the table. I took an idea I saw on Pinterest for a rosemary place card and adapted it to make a rosemary wreath napkin ring. The crafting process is very similar, but napkin rings definitely need a little extra structure to hold the napkins in their grip. Here’s what you need:

Unless you grow your own spreading rosemary sprigs in a personal herb garden, you’ll need to tie at least two sprigs together to make a circle large enough. Don’t focus on tying a pretty bow – just wrap the string around each spring to tie them together.

Finally, tie an extra string around each rosemary wreath to tie off any stray rosemary needles. Once you’re sure the string will hold, gently thread it through each napkin.

The tablecloth and runner set the tone for the rest of the decor. It can draw attention to the center or set up space for decorations running the length of the table. One possibility for centerpieces is a thick flower arrangement. Warm colored artificial flowers contrast with greenery to create an eye-catching design. Adding autumn leaves and berries gives the look more texture. Centerpieces can be used alone or combined with other decorations. This is a great way to start decorating a room.

Mini pumpkins and gourds can also be included in your centerpiece. They add different colors, shapes and textures. Real pumpkins can be used, but artificial pumpkins have several advantages:

A recent fall trend is to hollow out pumpkins and use them as vases to hold flowers, leaves, wheat and other fall items. This “Pumpkin Vase” makes a unique centerpiece. Instead, you can use artificial pumpkins, as real pumpkins will rot.

When creating your pumpkin vase, consider the colors you use in your flower arrangement. The dark green offsets the orange well. You may want to limit the orange in your arrangement as it will start to blend in with the pumpkin.

If you want to do something different with your fall decor, consider creating a rustic look. Choose materials like metal, jute and wood. Incorporate earthy tones like greens, browns, dark oranges and reds for a simple country style. While it’s still seasonally appropriate, it’s a less common decorating scheme. Our next idea for a centerpiece, the cornucopia, is a classic fall and Thanksgiving decoration. It can stand alone or be part of a larger centerpiece. You can put a variety of things in it, such as fake apples, leaves, mini pumpkins and berries. Although cornucopias are traditional decorations, you can give them a modern look by using wire horns or including painted pumpkins.

As you decorate, remember that gold is a stunning fall color. Choose fall decor with gold accents. For example, gourds, pumpkins and wheat in metallic shades will beautifully complement other decorations.
