Small Decorative Tray For Coffee Table – For a while, my coffee table served as a Hot Wheels race track and Little People village. As my boys got older, I was able to make this coffee table look big again! Now, with the help of some blogging friends, I’m sharing tips on how to create a chic coffee table vignette so you TOO can transform your family room.
I’m excited to feature this coffee table decor as part of the monthly Pinterest challenge hosted by Cindy of County Road 407.

Coffee Table Decor Ideas And How To Style Them
This month, our inspiration photo came from Yvonne of StoneGable who shared her Summer Open House Tour. It is a sight to see!
Yvonne’s blog always has expert decorating tips and interior design secrets. I promise you will be glad you visited.
In the vignette below, I share how I took elements from Yvonne’s photo and created my own version using things I already had.
Minute Fall Vignettes
Using Yvonne’s tray decor as a starting point, I went on a shopping tour around the house. I noticed six key elements that I wanted to capture in my vignette:
Luckily, some of these items were already in my stash, although admittedly most weren’t on my coffee table yet…
You will notice that I had to improvise some elements, but the effect is about the same. Can you identify where I made the substitution?
Coffee Table Decor Ideas
For a rustic coffee table aesthetic, I used a light colored rectangular tray. This tray was a thrift store find, but I’ll link to similar items at the bottom of this post.
I’ve seen so many different tray styles on Pinterest, from mirror/acrylic to vintage/wood and everything in between. Since my coffee table and side tables have a dark, rustic feel, I felt that a lighter fabric tray would provide a good contrast and still remain casual.
*Note: I like to angle the tray against a square coffee table for more visual interest.

This French country urn is one of my favorite purchases ever! It is huge though, measuring about 16×9 inches…
Although I love how it looks in the living room, it usually sits on our dining room table where it doesn’t get nearly as much traffic from the 5 year old twins. However, I love how the swirls on the decorative box mimic the emblem on the urn.
To balance out the drama of the urn, I added boxwood topiary (stacked on three books), a rustic ceramic bird, and a decorative box with assorted weaves and rattan balls.

Again, I didn’t make any extra purchases for this challenge, so the little decorative balls in the box serve as a little nod to Yvonne’s original metal balls.
You’ll notice that I also changed the cushions on the couch in the background. While I go for a completely neutral aesthetic, I can’t live without pops of color. I think the pillow patterns give the vignette a different feel. What are your thoughts?
A few years ago I discovered a lot about boxwood topiaries at Target. You’ll never know the difference between this little boxwood and others I’ve seen in high-end home decor stores. Real dried leaves!
Using Decorative Trays For Pretty Fall Vignettes
By the way, the coffee books are deliberately cropped, because the spines are too dark for this scene.
My little country bird is usually above the TV in the art alcove, but she insisted on being a part of this vignette. Who am I to deny her?

How To Decorate A Coffee Table (15 Styling Ideas And Tips)
I bought these decorative serving trays last week and I love them! I carried them all over our house and realized I could use them in almost every room. I decided to use the trays in the living room and I love how they add interest to my coffee table.
Services are available in all shapes, sizes and colors. I own several made of metal, plastic, straw, jute and wood. I wanted some larger trays that are affordable and I love this set I found on Amazon Home.
These white decorative trays are available in pairs. They measure 19″ square x 15 3/4″ square, the perfect size to decorate anywhere in your home.
Designer Approved Decorative Trays
These two vintage white large and medium square serving bowls are perfect for a table or cupboard, coffee in bed or for holding drinks and food.
The best advice I have before you start decorating or designing your home is to start with what you already own. When I start styling, I grab a basket and go through our home looking for nice things. I usually put a lot of stuff back, but ‘searching’ always amazes me that I always find so many wonderful things to include.
I am always careful not to overdo it when styling. I like the simpler style. I almost always use an odd number of items, whether I think about it or not. Don’t ask me why, I just like them that way!

I decided not to use a lot of color because I like the monochromatic look of our living room right now. It’s a simple, easy and fun way to decorate.
I love this view of the table. The trays are made from individual pieces of wood and I love the design.
My friend KariAnne also decorated her living room with a tray. You can see the gorgeous blue and white tray here in her blog post called Look What I Just Got for the Living Room. Be sure to visit her blog to see what she’s been up to.

One of the things I love about trays is that you can easily style them differently if you want! (That means this tray will look different after a few days. I can almost guarantee it.)
So many things work on a decorative tray! I love ceramic vases, apothecary jars, candles, books, vases, flowers and all things vintage.
I like to mix vintage and new pieces that are different sizes and heights. I always use an odd number of items and try to fill the tray, but not overfill.
