Square Coffee Table Decor Ideas – I love nice coffee table decor! When I took a good look at the two coffee tables in our house, I realized that there are five basic decorations that I always use and today I’m going to share each of these coffee table decoration ideas with you!
I always use a large tray on my tables. All the time. I love that they keep everything neatly curled up and if you want to clear your coffee table to use for play or to put food on, you can take everything away by simply lifting the tray. Containers are also a great way to add a contrasting texture or color to keep things interesting.
Square Coffee Table Decor Ideas
For our family room coffee table, I used a large 28 inch square that takes up a lot of the coffee table but still leaves room for my husband to put his feet up (we keep a designated “foot pillow” for him to do this – lol!) :

I had the hardest time finding a large square tray with handles that I liked, but I finally found the perfect one on etsy. The store where I bought it no longer exists, but you can find an almost identical tray at . They offer them in a wide range of colors in a velvety matte or shiny gloss. A tray this big is expensive, but I’ll have mine for years. I love that if I change my color scheme in the future, I can just repaint it instead of buying a new tray.
On our ottoman / coffee table in the living room I mostly use light woven trays to add some brightness and texture. My favorite is which is a nice size and a great price for such a large tray:

Hey, be sure to add felt pads to the bottom of the woven trays to make sure they don’t scratch your coffee table! Here are a few more favorite end table trays that would also work nicely (
I use flowers and natural elements in my home because they bring life in a way that nothing else can, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of my favorite ideas for decorating a coffee table! In the summer when tons of flowers bloom in our yard, I keep small bouquets of fresh flowers on our coffee table:
You can add even more life and personality by placing your flowers in something unique like this brass planter of mine (you can find similar planters too) that I’m quite obsessed with:

If you don’t have flowers you can cut from your yard, pick up a $5 pack of tulips at the grocery store, or for even less maintenance, add a plant. The snake plant that was on our living room coffee table is the best – seriously unkillable:
And I love having it on my stack of books and at the end of our coffee table – this is another way to bring nature into the room.
There’s also no shame in going fake! I recently bought raspberries and two of them make the most beautiful little arrangement:

And after moving my snake plant upstairs, I used three of the fake eucalyptus branches (found) on our living room ottoman:
You can also use other natural elements to add life – a bowl of pine cones, feathers or marine elements such as driftwood, shells and coral are just a few ideas. The best thing about natural elements is that there are so many on your doorstep that you can find and use for free!
Books are another one of my favorite ideas for decorating a coffee table. They’re perfect for adding a layered look and it’s nice to have some interesting coffee table books for your family and guests to pick up and read. Being a design lover, most of mine (big surprise) are design-centric. Books about the area you live in, your favorite state or country to vacation in, or your favorite hobby are other great choices.

You might also want to consider getting a bunch of your photos off your phone and computer into one of – those are future coffee table goals for me! And if you want to add some color or pattern to your coffee table, an easy way to do it is to use scraps of your favorite fabric:
And if you’re a design lover like me and looking for good coffee table books, here are some that have great content inside and look nice on the outside (
Along with some stacked coffee table books, I always add a book or two. It can be anything from a large gold ribbon (similar is available) that I used on my fabric covered book above to a decorative magnifying glass like one or a small piece of coral like:

Decorative boxes are the best! There are so many beautiful options and they are great for hiding things you don’t want cluttering up your desk. Our coffee table in the family room holds extra TV remotes, our lighting remote, and my photo flash drives that I need from time to time as I transfer the computer to the sectional:
Once you have the basics in place, it’s time to have some fun and add a few quirky things that you love! For me it’s often brass animals (#obsessed) like a pair of brass cranes (similar ones available):

But for you it could be something related to your favorite hobby or a piece that simply has some history and special meaning. Put it all together and you have a coffee table that is the star of your room!

Coffee Table Decor Ideas And How To Style Them
This month, our photo inspiration comes from Yvonne of StoneGable who shared her Summer Open House Tour. It is a sight to behold!
Yvonne always has expert decorating tips and interior design secrets on her blog. I promise you’ll be glad you visited.
In my vignette below, I’ll walk through how I captured elements of Yvonne’s photo and created my own version using items I already had on hand.
Coffee Table Decor Ideas That Add Interest + Style
Using Yvonne’s tray decor as a starting point, I went house shopping. I saw six main elements that I wanted to replicate in my widget:
Luckily, I already had some of these items in my inventory, though I’ll admit that most aren’t on my coffee table…yet!
You’ll notice that I have to improvise some things, but the effect is about the same. Can you spot where I made substitutions?
