Square Coffee Table Decorating Ideas – I love a pretty coffee table decoration! After taking a deep look at the two coffee tables in our home, I realized that I always use five key interior design elements, and today I’m sharing one of these coffee table design ideas with you!

I always use a large tray on the coffee table. Always. I love that they keep everything organized and when you want to clear your coffee table to use it to play games or set the dining table, you can remove everything with a simple lift of the tray. Trays are also a great way to add contrasting textures or colors to keep things interesting.

For the coffee table in our family room, I chose a large 28″ square wooden tray that takes up the bulk of the coffee table, but still leaves room for my husband to prop his feet up (we have a foot pad to do that with – lol!):

I had the hardest time finding a large tray with a handle that I liked, but I finally found the perfect tray on Etsy. The store I bought mine from no longer exists, but you can find an almost identical tray here. They offer them in a variety of velvety matte or glossy gloss finishes. A tray this big is expensive, but I’ve had one for years. I love that if I change my color scheme in the future, I can repaint it instead of buying a new tray.

On our living room ottoman/coffee table, I mostly use light woven trays to add brightness and texture. My favorite is this one which is a good size and a good price for such a large tray:

I use flowers and natural elements throughout my home because they add life in a way that nothing else can, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of my favorite coffee table design ideas! In the summer, when our yard is full of flowers, I place small bouquets of fresh flowers on our coffee table:

Coffee Table Decor Ideas For Every Style

If you don’t have yard flowers to cut from your yard, pick up a $5 bouquet of tulips from the grocery store or add an even lower maintenance plant. This snake plant on our living room coffee table is the best—seriously impossible:

And I love that I have a stack of books above our coffee table, another way to bring nature into this room.

There is no shame in lying either! I recently bought raspberries and two of them are the most beautiful:

And after moving my snake upstairs, I used three of these faux eucalyptus branches (found) on our living room ottoman:

You can also use other natural elements to add life – a bowl of pine cones, feathers or sea elements such as driftwood, shells and coral are just a few ideas. The best thing about natural ingredients is that there are so many at your doorstep that you can find and use for free!

Books are one of my favorite coffee table design ideas. They are great for adding a layered look and are great to have fun coffee table books for your family and guests to pick up and read. Being a design lover, most of me (big surprise) focuses on design. Books about the area you live in, your favorite state or country to vacation in, or a favorite hobby are also great choices.

You might consider getting a bunch of your photos from your phone and computer and adding one of the following – that’s a future coffee table goal for me! And if you want to add color or pattern to your coffee table, here’s an easy way to do it using scraps of your favorite fabric:

I always add a book cover or two next to some stacked coffee table books. They can be almost anything, from the large gold swing arm (similarly available) I used in my fabric-covered book above, to a decorative lens like a single or small piece of coral:

Decorative boxes are the best! There are many beautiful options and they are perfect for storing things that you don’t want to clutter your table. Our family room coffee table holds an extra TV remote, a remote for our lighting, and my photo memory stick that I occasionally need when I use my laptop in Section:

Once you have these essentials, it’s time to have some fun and add some quirky things you like! For me, it’s often brass animals (#crazy), like this pair of brass cranes (similar available):

But for you it could be something related to your favorite hobby or something that just has history and special meaning. Put it all together and you have a coffee table that is the star of your room!
