In addition to apples, pears are often used in sweet desserts. But, for another Rosh Hashanah table idea, they can also be used for decoration. Like a pomegranate! Many eat pomegranates, expressing the desire that “our merits be as many as pomegranate seeds.” This fruit is not eaten on the second night of the holiday. So instead, choose “fresh fruit” or fruit that you haven’t eaten since the previous season.

One of the most wonderful customs of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is the combination of apples and honey. Eating apple slices dipped in honey indicates a wish for a sweet New Year. But I’m always struck by the happy coincidence that apples are always around this time of year, the harvest, the apple picking, and the back-to-school rituals. So, naturally, my holiday schedule is mostly built around the theme of apples.

To make the sweet elixir, line each place setting with miniature canning jars, attach a matching ribbon, and decorate with the Jewish greeting, Shana Tovah (Happy New Year) and the New Year’s date. If you’re hosting a fall harvest table, use jars with labels printed with your guests’ names as place cards.

Vintage serving platters add festive elegance to the display, combining rustic table decor with more sophisticated pieces.

The floral arrangements are based on red roses, special enough for the occasion, but casually tied with ribbon and decorated with berries and stems, reminiscent of apple picking day in the country.

The centerpiece of the wire rack features a round straw, another custom unique to the Rosh Hashanah dinner, where the straw is baked (rather than long and braided) to represent the cyclical nature of the year. Pomegranate symbolizes the good works commanded by God, because the fruit contains 613 seeds, the same number of commandments.

This time last year, Miami was hit by Category 5 Hurricane Irma. In our evacuation efforts, my family and I moved to South Carolina 10 days before Rosh Hashanah before the storm hit. When we were out and about, we walked along Westminster’s beautiful nature trails and forests and discovered some amazing scenery. During our excursion, we noticed that there were several trees lying around, some of which we cut down and brought home. We picked this tree bark for our rustic nature-inspired Rosh Hashanah table decorations and wanted to share some of our design ideas with you.

First, we covered our table with white/brown striped paper to mimic the interior texture of the wood. We placed a long rectangular strip in the center of the table and placed nine fake green apples. We cut five apples, put a small candle inside each cut and take the role of fire rods. At either end of the rectangular strip are two circular cutouts of the strip, each serving as a base for our floral foam center pieces. We used yellow orchids, alyssum, baby’s breath flowers, delicate green balls and green hypericum berries. To design the plate, we used craft paper and string to make little name tags for each guest that we attached to little fake apples. Next to the tags we added a little booklet wishing everyone a “Happy Snow” and thanking them for joining us for dinner. Inside the manual was a page that described each icon and explained the symbolism of the food. We added thin honey sticks to each guest and wished everyone a Happy New Year.
