Table Decorations For Summer Dinner Party – Hosting Tips05.30.21 It’s Official: It’s Dinner Time! Here’s how I built a clay summer table in my backyard

It’s official: backyard party season is upon us, and every time I step outside and feel the sun on my skin I shout “Hurray!” from the rooftops. I know I’m not the only one who wants to shout that. We’re in that blissful moment of early summer when I want to eat every meal outside. And this year, after winter has dragged us huddled behind masks and zooms, feels especially celebratory. As we emerge from our socially distant caves and begin to gather with friends and family, my focus is on bright seasonal recipes and simple table setting ideas to lift the mood. It doesn’t take much: imagine a beautiful tablecloth or a set of handmade bowls, otherwise at least taking center stage on the table.

I’m getting some nice things to decorate my brunch, barbecue and dinner tables. For me, the table is a place for expression of creativity and personal style through food and beauty that brings me joy. And it doesn’t take much to make a table really special.

Concept: This table is basically a collection of everything I love: crumpled linen napkins, handmade earthenware, patterned details in neutral shades. My inspiration is the abundance of herbs and vegetables in spring and they play an important role in decorative details and in my dinner menu.

The Best Summer Rehearsal Dinner Ideas

These bowls from August Saga are inspired by the sky and land of West Texas and the desert vibe I’ve been feeling a lot this season. I love that they are incredibly heavy weighted and each one is unique. Shop here:

When I set the dining table, I usually set the base with favorite items I already have (like this linen tablecloth and ceramic pitcher), and then add a few special new items that I add to my collection each season. The great thing about sticking mostly to a palette of neutrals is that you can mix and match seamlessly – if you only have 3 or 4 of a certain type of bowl or mug, change each one and it will look intentional. It’s all about embracing imperfection, so don’t overthink it – just go with the flow.

This stoneware pitcher looks handcrafted and high-end, but it’s a total steal at $15. It was the perfect craft container for the spring tulips I found at the flower market that morning. Shop here:

Here’s the mix and match of neutrals I was telling you about. I decided to use those desert-inspired stoneware bowls, but I didn’t have any other pieces from the collection so, I paired it with glazed plates from Anthropologie and I loved how it created a unique combination. Handcrafted by artisans in Morocco, these recycled glasses are my new summer go-to: they’re the perfect multi-purpose size for white wine or sparkling water, and I love that they add a bit of texture while keeping things really simple. Each glass contains a natural variation, recycled glass shade and extremely fine bubbles. They’re a total steal at just $8 a glass.

I’m usually busy – you’ll never see me ironing a starched tablecloth, that’s for sure! Still, especially in the warmer months, there’s something about a crumpled, stonewashed linen tablecloth on the table. It’s light and makes me feel like I’m having a long lazy lunch at an Italian villa.

How To Set A Simple French Country Summer Table

Since there wasn’t a large enough tablecloth to go down to the floor like I envisioned, I used two plain white sheets I’ve had for years (one of them an old curtain!), and then placed them opposite. The directions were so that there were screens on all four sides of the table.

Let’s talk about this gorgeous gray stone linen handkerchief. I love the warmth and earthiness they bring to our environment. Handwoven in India, this is Belgian linen, and you can feel the quality in their soft, substantial drape.

How To Host The Ultimate Summer Dinner Party (recipes, Schedules, Menus And More)

My original plan was to skip the flowers and let the farmers market serve as my table decor – I like to put fresh fruits and vegetables in a wooden bowl or woven plate for an effortlessly beautiful centerpiece. But then I spotted these tulips at the flower market, and I was blown away…

The tulips are so stunning that I wanted their beautiful color and ruffled edges to be the center of attention, so I placed them in a simple white pitcher (above), then left with a simple snack board and a large table with a bowl full of lime.

These hand painted plates are made in Portugal with a beautifully glazed pattern that is subtle enough to mix and match with other pieces. The mix of taupe and beige (with just a subtle hint of shimmer) makes these feel really special, but keeps my neutral palette throughout the table.

Dinner Party Themes Your Guests Will Love

The ultimate “summer on the Riviera,” right? The other day I walked into the new LoveShockFancy store in Austin and immediately fell in love with five white dresses. I had to pick one (alas, old budget), so I finally landed on this sun-ready Lupita midi dress in antique white. It’s a decent play because I can wear it to every gathering all season long. (Price per dress, can you feel me?)

Another essential for any alfresco dinner is a sturdy tray for carrying food and supplies back and forth from the kitchen. This chunky seaweed tray is in keeping with my beachy style – when I’m not using it to transport glassware, it usually resides on my citrus-laden dining room table.
