They say love is what makes a house a house, but well-chosen art, a few throw pillows and, perhaps, furniture that matches your space, also play a role. Because despite all the happy vibes going on in my little Toronto semi, there is nothing about the white walls and the media unit coming out of the living room door that shouts “happy, active people live here” .

It’s not for lack of trying. Since we moved in last January, my husband Colin and I have repainted, replaced the kitchen cabinets, added a second sink to the bathroom, opened the walls, ordered new windows, and more. But the easiest job to provide this site? After trying for the third time to buy a rug for our living room, I was ready to admit that I didn’t have the time, the eye, or the willpower to decorate this house on my own. Event Planning Archives
“Even as a design enthusiast, it took me two years to furnish my home,” says Gloria Song-Foster, founder of White Dahlia Design, an authentic design service based in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont. She and her team now help clients get their bedrooms Pinterest-worthy in less than a month, all without setting foot in the house.
Packages start at $200 to choose paint colors and get a few accessories and go up to $749 or more for a 3D customization plan. I chose their mid-level package for my open living and dining areas. Starting at $649 per room, it includes a 3D floor plan, furniture and utility shopping list, and pre- and post-design calls, as well as placing and tracking your orders (and returns).
Many people know his style; they just don’t know how to do it,” says Song-Foster. But with a few phone calls and clicks, and a little work, it’s easy to pull off a makeover. Here’s how to maximize your visual makeover
Why Virtual Design Is More Important Now Than Ever — Light And Dwell
The process for most services is the same: they all require prior work and some research. “The most important thing to consider is how you get your current location,” Song-Foster said. “What kind of work are you missing?” Maybe you’re down in storage; maybe you can’t watch the kids play while you cook dinner. Another big question: How do you want to feel in a place? In our case, we wanted a cool place to host friends, but there was no place to stay.
Then I took pictures of my space, shot a video, made a list (with measurements!) of all the decor pieces and furniture I wanted to keep, and drew a detailed floor plan. I uploaded all this to the internet portal and added comments where necessary, explaining, for example, the idea behind our DIY wall and bracket unit.

Modern Dining Table Designs
Before your first call with your designer, you’ll need to figure out what aesthetic you want. “It’s not so important to be caught up in the name of a particular style,” Song-Foster said. “Instead, choose your favorite photos.”
On the phone, we chatted about some of the common elements among my inspired photographs: a painted paint palette, subtle colors through the use of accessories and natural textures, and the clean lines of furniture. Song-Foster also asked me more questions about fabrics, finishes and colors. In the end, we decided that the space should be modern and clean, with added warmth by using natural materials. “Like walking into the lobby of a boutique hotel,” he launched. That sounded good to me.

Fall Tablescape Two Ways
After calculating the major items we needed—a dining set, a chair, and a possible media unit—and gathering materials, we came up with $5,000, a sum that probably wouldn’t go as far as we thought.
Song-Foster says it can cost $7,000 to $9,000 to furnish a room on a budget: “People underestimate the cost of accessories, but it’s the little things that make a room look finished.” I was open to investing in key pieces, so we chose a very cheap mix. We also talked about my favorite brands: EQ3, Note and Churches furniture; HomeSense, Indigo and Ikea accessories. With that, the team took it.

Gaming Setups That We Really Like
“Is our house like this!?” Colin asked when I showed him our two 3D design options a week later. I share his feelings of fear.
It was clear that layers of equipment will make a big impact: tall plants, tons of pillows, blankets in the same style, mirrors, wall art and the whole place is decorated with vases and objects. But there were even bigger differences to consider. In the first choice, our existing furniture arrangement was kept intact, with our DIY media unit and sofa, but the shelf was replaced with a narrow console table, a practical update since it’s near our front door. In the second, the layout of our living room was changed, with a separate wall sofa, a new media unit and room for two armchairs. Most notably, the white wall in the dining room was painted the same dark-green color as our leafy wall behind the TV, a perfect solution to distinguish the long common wall that runs through the living and dining areas.
Song-Foster says one of the biggest mistakes her clients make is scheduling a design call after they’ve properly reviewed the plans. With this in mind, Colin and I carefully considered each option before booking a call. In the end we decided to choose between the two: keep the sofa set, update our media unit, replace the shelf for the console table, add an armchair, and yes, paint that wall black.

New stuff: Exciting! Calling it on your credit card is scary! Being about $3,000 over budget made it even more difficult. All those pillows and vases can clump together, making it hard to put away. But that would be a mistake, says SongFoster: “If you wait to add equipment, the room doesn’t feel finished.” And since my goal was exactly that, a home that felt like a real residence, I realized that these were the details that would distinguish my empty slate box from a boutique hotel.
Of course, I compromised. Since I knew I wanted to get the original artwork out, we stuck to printing for now. Otherwise, I marked all my product selections on the portal and White Dahlia handled the ordering and tracking. One by one, the boxes began to appear. After a few messages from the design team about the best way to install plant hangers and how to strategically organize our new cushions (they offer 30 days of support for these types of questions), the conversion was completed. With our new furniture, my favorite rug and all the perfectly finished floors, maybe it’s love that makes a house a home, love the way it looks from floor to ceiling, and all the beautifully designed details in between.
