Something magical happens when you find the perfect combination of flavors in a food and drink pairing (think milk and cookies!), and that’s especially true when it comes to wine and cheese pairings. The right pairing makes the wine and cheese taste much better than they would on their own; the sum is really greater than its parts. Wines don’t have to be expensive to be good, and if you have a great cheese to go with your wine at a reasonable price, it’s a great experience. Like a groan even. And who doesn’t want to serve (and eat) something that will attract groans?!?

Holiday cocktail parties, New Year’s Eve, birthday parties, engagement parties, and bachelorette parties (especially wines from the region where the couple is getting married or on their honeymoon – I did this for a bride a few years ago who was in headed to Italy for their honeymoon. ) to name just a few. The appetizers, Caprese Salad Skewers, 10-Minute Baked Pesto Shrimp, Prosciutto-Wrapped Cantaloupes, and Easy Cheese Bread Sticks go well with the wine pairings and are filling enough to serve as a meal. Dark chocolate truffles and pistachio ricotta dip with fresh figs satisfy the chocolate and fruit-loving crowd and make a nice end to the meal (they also go well with some of the red wines you’ll be serving). The photos from this wine and cheese pairing are from a book club I hosted last month. I chose a book called Love by the Glass by Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher, the famous journalist/wine couple behind the Wall Street Journal’s “Tastings” column. The theme of wine and cheese was a great starting point for our discussion of the book, which is essentially the couple’s love story, told through the wines they drank at times throughout their lives together, with history in the making American wine and wine marketing throughout history. sites. The book has some interesting topics to discuss, including some personal challenges, which made it a great book club read. There are some other great pairings you can substitute for any of the above, including Zinfandel & Monterey Jack, Chianti & Parmeggiano-Reggiano, Borollo & Pecorino, or Sencerre & fresh goat cheese. As a general rule, choose a cheese from the same region as the wine and you’ll generally have a good flavor combination. As they say, things grow together.
